Pengertian complex sentence

Complex sentence ataupun kalimat kompleks adalah sebuah jenis kalimat di mana dalam satu kalimat tersebut terdiri dari 1 kalimat yang bisa berdiri sendiri (independent) dan 1 kalimat yang tidak bisa berdiri sendiri serta bergantung pada kalimat yang satunya lagi (dependent). Kedua kalimat ini biasanya dihubungkan dengan tanda baca koma ataupun kata penghubung ( Conjunction )

Kata-kata penghubung yang bisa kamu digunakan dalam complex sentence, antara lain:

1. Kongjungsi yang menunjukkan waktu, seperti before, after, when, while, until, since, dan sebagainya.
2. Kongjunsi yang menunjukkan kondisi ataupun situasi seperti if ataupun unless.
3. Kongjungsi yang menunjukkan sebab-akibat, seperti because dan cause.
4. Kongjungsi yang menunjukkan hal bertentangan seperti although, eventhough
5. Kongjungsi yang digunakan untuk menambahkan kata keterangan seperti that, when, where, who.

Independent Clause (IC) + conjunction + dependent clause (DC)

atau

Conjunction + dependent clause (DC) + independent clause (IC).

Hal yang perlu kamu perhatikan adalah selalu tempatkan tanda koma “,” di depan independent clause jika kalimat tersebut diawali dengan kata penghubung (kongjungsi) di awal kalimat.

Contoh complex sentence:

(Saya akan menghubungimu setelah saya mendapat berita itu.)

Kalimat “I will give you a call” merupakan kalimat independent clause (IC) yang meskipun tidak diikuti kalimat berikutnya masih bisa diketahui maknanya, namun hal ini berbeda dengan kalimat “after I get the news” yang merupakan kalimat dependent clause (DC) yang akan kehilangan maknanya jika tidak didahului dengan kalimat apapun.
